Initial application: A claimant can apply online, by phone, or at the Social Security Administration office. It takes 3-4 months to get a decision (60 days to appeal).

Reconsideration: 3-4 months to get a decision (60 days to appeal)

Hearing: 9-12 months to get a hearing, 1-2 months to get a decision (60 days to appeal)

Appeals Counsel: It can take up to 18 months to get a decision.

Can I collect Social Security benefits if I get deported?

No.

Can I get survival spouse benefits if I live in Mexico?

Yes, as long as the widow can legally enter the United States to apply.

Most decisions on initial claims will be made under 3 months. Many cases will have to go through the disability reconsideration appeal, and hearing process. This could take 1-2 years before benefits are approved.
